Thorngrove is a 200-bed hospital built in Zimbabwe’s second largest city in 1941. It offers treatment for diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, hepatitis, typhoid and HIV/AIDS. Its staff drew up a list of needs which was sent to ZimHealth, following a meeting between Assistant Director of Health Services, Bulawayo, Dr Marape, and two ZimHealth members, Shiva Murugasampillay and Elizabeth Mason, who were making a field visit to Pelandaba Polyclinic in Bulawayo in December 2009. During a consultation with Dr Marape, it was noted that Thorngrove infectious diseases hospital was in urgent need of support.

Among the clinical items included by Thorngrove staff on their “wish list” were a medicine trolley and bed pan washer. Four television sets and DVD players, two four-plate stoves and two food carts, plus a steam autoclave and a food mixer, were high on the staff’s list. An industrial washing machine and a drier, plus items such as two microwave ovens, were also included.

Included in the donation to Thorngrove from ZimHealth were ten fans, 100 sets of crockery and cutlery, and hospital sheets, pillow cases and blankets

The Zimbabwe Network for Health (ZimHealth) seeks to raise funds to procure and distribute m edicines, diagnostics, vaccines and other commodities to rehabilitate the health facilities in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe’s once robust health-care services have declined in recent years, exacerbated by the AIDS epidemic, a serious economic crisis and the considerable exodus of skilled personnel including doctors and nurses.
