Meeting a need at Thorngrove infectious diseases hospital in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe 2011
Thorngrove infectious diseases hospital in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, has taken delivery of a large consignment of clinical items, hospital linen and ancillary equipment such as an autoclave used for sterilising equipment, four-plate stoves, televisions and food serving carts. Sent to Thorngrove by the Zimbabwe Network for Health (ZimHealth), the consignment was valued at more than US$33,000.

Thorngrove is a 200-bed hospital built in Zimbabwe’s second largest city in 1941. It offers treatment for diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, hepatitis, typhoid and HIV/AIDS. Its staff drew up a list of needs which was sent to ZimHealth, following a meeting between Assistant Director of Health Services, Bulawayo, Dr Marape, and two ZimHealth members, Shiva Murugasampillay and Elizabeth Mason, who were making a field visit to Pelandaba Polyclinic in Bulawayo in December 2009. During a consultation with Dr Marape, it was noted that Thorngrove infectious diseases hospital was in urgent need of support.
Among the clinical items included by Thorngrove staff on their “wish list” were a medicine trolley and bed pan washer. Four television sets and DVD players, two four-plate stoves and two food carts, plus a steam autoclave and a food mixer, were high on the staff’s list. An industrial washing machine and a drier, plus items such as two microwave ovens, were also included.
